The origins of Kasbahs in Morocco can be traced back to the Berbers, who built these fortified structures to protect their communities from external threats. The earliest Kashbahs date back to the 7th century, though many of the structures still existing today were bult during the medieval period. These fortresses were often expanded and renovated by successive dynasties, each leaving their mark on the architecture. They were typically built from rammed earth and sun-dried mud.

Continuing on the theme of very small islands inside lakes or near beaches (see previous posts starting from the one dated 23rd September 2024), here is another small island on Lake Serre-Poncon, in France. Nestled on this small island in the lake is Saint-Michel chapel, which once stood on the top of a hill above the hamlet of Couches, but was carefully preserved when the dam was built in 1961. The chapel traces back to the 12th century, but was destroyed in 1692 by the troops of the Duke of Savoy. It was later rebuilt in the 17th century.
This is not the first time either in this group, that we have visited a sacred building from the past peeking out from a lake (please note our interesting post here: zafoid.com/post/view/9118 relating to Lake Reschen, in northern Italy).
