Human rights activist and 2022 Nobel Prize winner Ales Bialiatski is currently on trail in Belarus. Bialiatski founded Viasna, Belarus' most prominent human rights organization.

Bialiatski, along with his Viasna co-workers Valentin Stefanovich and Vladimir Labkovich, were taken into custody in July 2021, amid a wave of anti-government demonstrations against Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. The trio were originally detained on tax evasion charges, but are now facing between seven to 12 years in prison on the charges of smuggling money to finance opposition activists.

The largest mural painting in the world is in Mexico

The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is not your average university. The school, based in Mexico City, was founded in 1551 by King Philip II of Spain (then called the Royal Pontifical University of Mexico) and is the oldest university in North America. Today it is the largest university in Mexico with a strong focus on research and cultural impact. UNAM is not just for students. History-loving visitors to Mexico City will also enjoy visiting this prestigious school.

The main attraction for visitors is to see the campus of Chuo University, which was not built until the 1950s. The Central University campus is a work of art in itself thanks to its modern architecture, which feature huge blocks of buildings with sides adorned with murals by Diego Rivera, Diego Alfaro Siqueiros and other notable artists is. The images posted here feature architect Juan O´Gorman´s mural paintings adorning the University's Central Library. This work covers all four walls of the building, meshing seamlessly with the façade's windows. This is the largest mural in the world, composed of natural coloured stones, to be found only in Mexico.

All the murals (measuring 43,000 square feet) were made out of no less than 3 million pieces of coloured natural rocks. Thanks to its artistic flair and history, the campus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Humankind.

Anežka (Agnes) Kašpárková, a former agricultural worker, picked up the wall decoration hobby from another local woman who had been doing the same for years. Using vibrant blue paint and a small brush, she creates intricate floral wall murals inspired by traditional Moravian (southern Czech) artwork. Despite attaining both local and viral acclaim, she has insisted that her house painting hobby purely for pleasure. “I am an artist,” she stated to Czech media. “I just enjoy wall painting, and I want to help.”
