A tiny wild cat has been identified as a new species in a remarkable discovery. This discovery is the first time that a new living feline species has been formally named and described, in over a century. Referred to as 'tilcayo' by local communities, it measures just 18 inches (46cm) long and weighs around 3lb (1.4kg), making it smaller than the average domestic cat. It is native to Bolivia's lush Yungas cloud forest, a mountainous region of humid forests that are often shrouded in clouds. A ten-year-old male examplar is currently living at Senda Verde wildlife sanctuary, after previously being kept as a pet by a local family. The study's co-lead author Jonas Lescroart, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, said that researchers are currently aware of just one other living tilcayo, observed infrequently through some camera-traps that indicate that the new species is nocturnal.
