Humpback whales live in all oceans around the world. During the warmer months (and occasionally into cooler months), humpback whales spend most of their time feeding and building up fat stores (blubber) to sustain them throughout the winter. Humpback whales are "gulp feeders", swallowing prey in bulk. They push out the sea water that they swallow through the numerous baleen plates (which are noticeable in the image set accompanying this post — please click on an image to view full size) that line up their upper jaw. They filter-feed on small crustaceans (mostly krill) as well as on small fish such as herring, capelin, sand lances, and Atlantic mackerel.
