Right now, most batteries are made with lithium and are expensive with a large, physical footprint, and can only cope with a limited amount of excess power.
But in the town of Kankaanpää, a team of young Finnish engineers have completed the first commercial installation of a battery made from sand that they believe can solve the storage problem in low-cost, low impact way.
In theory, satellites could continuously collect photons from the sun — converting the energy to photovoltaic cells, and wirelessly beam that electricity as radio waves back to receivers on Earth.
A space-based solar power station placed in Earth’s orbit would be illuminated by the Sun 24 hours a day allowing it to generate electricity continuously. This would give it a significant advantage compared with solar power systems placed on Earth, which can only produce electricity during the day and are heavily dependent on the weather.
As global energy use is projected to increase by nearly 50% by 2050, this method of generating power could play a crucial role in helping meet the growing demand and tackling the climate crisis.
“Forever chemicals” — also known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS — break down slowly and accumulate in the environment and in human tissue, including in the liver, causing disease, according to a study published on Wednesday, 27th May 2022.
Thus far, scientists have determined a “probable link” between PFAS and diagnosed high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, testicular cancer, kidney cancer, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and liver damage.
