Malta is surrounded by several confirmed finds of oil and gas reserves, however such finds tend to be nearer to our neighbouring regions (namely Sicily, Libya and Tunisia). Malta's current territorial claims (i.e., the officially designated areas 1 to 7) in respect to oil and gas reserves, pointedly exclude all such confirmed reserves. Back in 1985, the International Court of Justice pronounced itself narrowly only in respect to where the marine border between Malta and Libya should stand. However said judgement did not include an examination of the merits of Italy's and Tunisia's territorial claims versus Malta.
